Animal Advocate Groups Form Giant Merger To Improve Prospects for Homeless Animals in Dallas

New website www.dallasanimals.org debuted on June 24.

DALLAS, TX - June 24, 2013: Three major animal welfare groups in Dallas are joining forces to leverage their know-how in one organization.

The three groups - Dallas Animal Advocates, Metroplex Animal Coalition and Dallas Companion Animal Project - are all well-known longtime advocates for Dallas' animal community. They'll now operate under the same 501(c)(3) umbrella and name: The Dallas Companion Animal Project (DCAP).

The cooperative venture represents a bold shift in how animal welfare groups typically operate. By coming together, the three groups increase their ability to respond to the community's pressing animal welfare issues.

"We all shared the same goal - to reduce the number of healthy adoptable animals being killed," says Chris Watts, who serves as the president of the Dallas Companion Animal Project. "I feel that the merger is critical to helping us achieve that goal. Collaborating makes us more effective."

To further expand its reach, DCAP has created a new website and they will use state-of-the-art technology to help increase adoptions and donations. The new website is at www.dallasanimals.org.

Aided by a grant from The Meadows Foundation, Dallas Animal Services (DAS) has also joined forces with DCAP and the Aidmatrix Foundation, a Dallas technology group whose programs will help manage volunteers, fundraising, donations and supplies.

"We can use technology to build capacity in local rescue groups, reunite owners with their pets and enhance access to pet-related resources," Watts says.

Moving animals from DAS to rescue groups can give them a better chance at finding a new home.
About Dallas Companion Animal Project
The Dallas Companion Animal Project is a non-profit organization created to focus on the future of the community by strengthening the connection between people and animals. DCAP will work to implement the plan conceived of by the City of Dallas No Kill Task Force, and to end the killing of all healthy, adoptable animals in the community. DCAP will focus on awareness and education, feral cats, spay/neuter, pet owner outreach, and pet placement support.

About Dallas Animal Advocates
Dallas Animal Advocates was formed in 2009 for the purpose of making Dallas a kinder place for animals by promoting a higher quality of life for animals served by Dallas Animal Services. Their initial programs focused on fences for tethered dogs and heartworm treatments for dogs rescued from Dallas Animal Services. They also provided the "creature comforts" of treats, toys and bedding that the animals at the Dallas Shelter might not have received otherwise.

About Metroplex Animal Coalition
The Metroplex Animal Coalition was formed in 2000 to bring a myriad of animal welfare groups together to work toward solving the decades-old problem of pet overpopulation. Since its free spay and neuter program began in 2002, the nonprofit has provided surgeries for 20,000 animals and has contributed just under $1 million to the community to help accomplish its goals.
